“C’mon, say it. I know you want to.”
“Say what?” I blink, pretending not to know what he’s talking about. But it’s pointless since his friends made it their mission to announce it to everybody within earshot.
Zane’s eyes narrow. “I bet it’s eating at you from the inside out.”
“It is not,” I protest, but I can’t help but laugh. “You have to admit, it was funny.”
“Do you see me laughing?”
I stand in front of him and tilt my head to the side in observation. His forehead is creased, a furrow nestled deep between his brows.
“No, but then again, you never laugh.” I rise on the tips of my toes and smooth my finger over his forehead. “Why is that?”
Zane’s mouth falls open. I’m not sure who’s more surprised by the touch, him or me. It’s like suddenly all the air is sucked from the space between us. He’s all that I can feel, all that I can smell. This close, it’s like all begins and ends with Zane West. And now that I have broken this barrier between us, I don’t want to move.
I slide my finger over his skin, feeling its warmth. His face softens, if only slightly.
“I do laugh,” he protests, his voice rough. His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows.
“Not nearly enough,” I whisper softly.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Rei and Zane. Their story is complicated as they are both driven and outside forces surround them. Rei's coach isn't a fan of them being a couple. Zane's past rears it's ugly head and threatens his future. I love all of the friends and the relationships that they have built. Love isn't easy and the right love is worth fighting for.
